Background:
Another two significant persons who led the military contingents during invasion included Tariq bin Ziyad who was of Berber minority and was born in North Africa. Conquest of Hispania:
From the chronicle of history, it is recorded that in the year 711 AD a country referred to as the Hispania hired a force under a man called the Commander Tariq to cross the mighty strait of Gibraltar with a few men only. Admirably staying true to the myth, he burned the fleet as soon as possible after getting on dry ground and told his men “we have nothing left to lose, and therefore, we have nothing to gain. ”
Battle of Guadalete:
Here it fought the forces of Tariq with the Gothic King Roderic or Rodrigo on the bank of a certain river known as the Guadalete river. Thus it is said that when the place was being selected it was known as “Jabal Tariq” – Mountain of Tariq and this could probably be the place or point where Tariq had alighted.
Cultural Impact:
If it is not much of an exaggeration one might say that what Tariq Imam sb and his contemporaries did for the Middle Ages culture, architecture, and the science of that region and much for the emerging Middle Ages Europe.
Tariq bin Ziyad is rather well known in the Islamic history and was known to put the machete of a vanguard fighter and an effective chief.
